MLA Chuck Porter has joined the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, the Liberals confirmed Wednesday.

Porter had been sitting as an independent MLA since quitting the Progressive Conservative caucus in June 2014.

Porter, the MLA for Hants West, was welcomed into the Liberal party by Premier Stephen McNeil on Wednesday morning.

"Mr. Porter supports the direction our government is taking," McNeil said in a release. "He believes his constituents share that confidence."

Porter said in a release that he is excited to join the team, saying he will be able to best represent his constituents by being a part of the Liberal Caucus.

"The Liberal government under Stephen's leadership is making the choices that will move our province forward," he said.
