Freezing rain has caused power outages in southern New Brunswick, forcing the closure of many schools.

And the province's Emergency Measures Organization is warning residents about a low-pressure weather system that has made travelling dangerous.

Snow, freezing rain and rain has been reported across the province.

The forecast is calling for several hours of freezing rain in northern regions - and there is a chance of localized flooding in other areas.

By 7:30 a.m., more than 12,000 NB Power customers were without electricity, most of them in the Fredericton and Chipman areas.

Emergency officials are advising residents to have an emergency kit ready.
