CALGARY - The provincial government will unveil a new plan to expand access to take-home naloxone kits during a Wednesday news conference.
Naloxone is a life-saving drug is used to temporarily reverse a fentanyl overdose.
Alberta's Associate Minister of Health Brandy Payne will unveil details on the new program at a Co-op pharmacy in Calgary's Beltline community at 9:30 a.m. MST.
Earlier this month, Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced it would be expanding access to take-home naloxone kits by funding the distribution of 4,000 kits and providing mandatory training sessions. The kits were distributed to 29 walk-in clinics and eight existing harm reduction sites.

According to AHS, there were 272 overdose deaths involving fentanyl in Alberta last year.
