The NHL gave Boston Bruins fans what they wanted. Sort of.
Some fans are incensed about the league's decision to have "The Voice" winner Jordan Smith, and not TD Garden singer Rene Rancourt, sing the U.S. national anthem before the New Year's Day game between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium. Montreal-based band Simple Plan is set to perform the Canadian anthem.
But the NHL announced Thursday that Rancourt will sing the anthems before the Alumni Game on Dec. 31.
Rancourt also performed at the Alumni Game rather than the Winter Classic when it was at Fenway Park in 2010. The NHL makes these decisions with NBC, which broadcasts the game.
