The Boston Red Sox added bullpen depth Friday.

The Red Sox announced they claimed right-handed reliever Roman Mendez off waivers from the Texas Rangers. To make room for Mendez on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved closer Koji Uehara to the 60-day disabled list.

The Red Sox are familiar with the 25-year-old pitcher. Mendez was signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 2007. He eventually was traded to the Rangers in 2010 as part of the deal that brought catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Boston.

Mendez appeared in 12 games this season for the Rangers and has 42 career big league appearances. The right-hander has an 0-2 career record with a 3.02 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .199 against Mendez in his career.

Mendez has a powerful arm, with a fastball that tops out in the mid-90s.
