The Boston Red Sox remain the cellar-dwellers of the American League East division, but it didn't have to be that way.
Interim manager Torey Lovullo gave in to revisionist history before Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles and admitted there were at least 10 games in which he thought the Red Sox definitely could have -- and probably should have -- won.
With Boston's recent surge to end the season, a 10-game swing in the standings would give them a 78-65 record -- Good for third place in the AL East but, more importantly, in the playoffs. With that record, the Red Sox currently would sit four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the division lead and securely in the second Wild Card spot, just one game behind the New York Yankees for the first Wild Card position.
Hindsight is 20/20, but with the way his team has played, it's hard to blame Lovullo -- or anyone for that matter -- for looking back and wondering "what if ?"
