Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn't the New York Jets' only quarterback consideration after Geno Smith went down.
Smith broke his jaw last month -- actually, linebacker IK Enemkpali broke Smith's jaw -- and is sidelined to begin the 2015 season. He could return around Week 6, but the Jets -- initially unaware of how long Smith would be sidelined -- did their homework before handing the keys to Fitzpatrick.
The Washington Redskins' quarterback situation was unclear at the time of Smith's injury, hence the Jets reportedly calling them about Kirk Cousins. The 'Skins named Cousins their starter, though, with former starter Robert Griffin III relegated to third-string duty behind Cousins and Colt McCoy.
Fitzpatrick later was named New York's starter. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Jets' Week 1 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Cousins completed 21 of 31 passes for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Redskins' Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
