Derrick Rose just can't catch a break.

The Chicago Bulls guard suffered a left orbital fracture after he was elbowed in the face during the team's opening day of practices Tuesday. As a result, Rose will have surgery on his left eye Wednesday.

"He got a little elbow," Bulls power forward Taj Gibson said, via ESPN Staff Writer Nick Friedell. "We don't know the (severity) of it, but hopefully he'll be fine. I know he's tough. But it was one of those plays, especially in practice, where everybody's going hard. It's just tough."

New Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Rose "looked great when he was out there," and that the play in question was "a good, hard elbow," according to Friedell.

Rose addressed his injury-plagued history at the Bulls' media day Monday.

"I can't get caught up into that," Rose said, referring to talk about his game. "I know I'm great. It's a lot of people that don't know I'm great, that's the thing. But it's cool. I know I can hoop. You can put me anywhere, and I know how to play the game of basketball."

The 26-year-old averaged 17.7 points in 51 games last season. He only played in 10 regular season games in the 2013-14 season.
