Toronto Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis, who signed a minor league contract with the team earlier this year, has announced his retirement, the club confirmed via Twitter on Friday.

The 35-year-old has not appeared in a Major League Baseball game since April 13, 2014, while recovering from left knee surgery in 2014 and shoulder surgery in 2015.

Izturis had signed a one-year $900,000 contract on Jan. 29 with an invite to spring training.

The switch hitter has a .269 career big league batting average with 39 homers and 334 RBIs with Montreal (2004), the Los Angeles Angels (2005-12) and Toronto (2013-14).
