A 28-year-old Gatineau man has been charged with terrorism for attempting to leave Canada to participate with a terrorist group.

Ismael Habib is scheduled to appear in a Montreal courtroom Friday. He has also been charged with making a false statement to obtain a passport, the Montréal Integrated National Security Enforcement Team said in a statement.

"This case clearly demonstrates that the RCMP and its partners are committed to investigating and prosecuting those who threaten Canada's national security," said RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia. "In all such investigations, we strive to collect the necessary evidence to successfully lay criminal charges."

Habib was arrested last week and was originally charged with criminal harassment, uttering threats and forging documents.
