SASKATOON – Authorities in Saskatoon are investigating a case of a man who allegedly died in police custody Friday. The 38-year-old man was arrested after officers were called to reports of a male running into oncoming traffic at 22nd Street and Avenue P at around 12:20 p.m. CT.

At the time of his arrest, officers said the suspect displayed symptoms of intoxication.

Police said he was in breach of court conditions and wanted on outstanding warrants.

The suspect was placed in the police's detention unit. At around 3:20 p.m., staff found the man unresponsive in his cell.

The Saskatoon Fire Department and MD Ambulance were called to provide emergency medical attention. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Members of the police's major crime unit along with the office of the chief coroner are investigating. The Saskatoon Police Service have notified the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice.
