One of the WWE's most memorable characters of the 1980s and 90s has passed away.

Michael "Iron Mike" Sharpe died in Hamilton, Ontario over the weekend. The 64-year-old reportedly had been wheelchair-bound since 2007.

Sharpe was considered more of a "jobber" in the WWE, often losing to bigger stars to help promote their careers. He was in and out of WWE from 1983-1995, and also frequently wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling.

He worked as a wrestling trainer following his retirement and owned his own school in New Jersey, training several future professional wrestling stars.

WWE released a statement expressing its sadness over the loss, adding the company "extends its condolences to Sharpe's family, friends and fans."
