FOXBORO, Mass. -- The Trey Williams era didn't last long for the New England Patriots.

The Patriots released Williams Thursday, according to the league's transaction wire. The Patriots claimed the running back off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys last Tuesday.

Williams was inactive Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles for his only game with the Patriots.

The Patriots are left with LeGarrette Blount, James White and Brandon Bolden at running back. They also have fullback Joey Iosefa on their practice squad. Iosefa played running back in college at Hawaii.

White caught 10 passes for 103 yards with a touchdown as the Patriots' third-down back on Sunday.

The Patriots also signed cornerback Rashaan Melvin to their practice squad and cut cornerback Chris Greenwood on Thursday.
