The Boston Red Sox added a key player to their bullpen Friday night.

The Red Sox have acquired closer Craig Kimbrel in a trade with the San Diego Padres. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the trade. Boston sent minor leaguers Manuel Margot, Carlos Asuaje, Logan Allen and Javier Guerra to San Diego in the deal.

Kimbrel has pitched in parts of six seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and Padres. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year and is a four-time All Star. He recorded 39 saves and posted a 2.58 ERA in 61 games over 59 1/3 innings in 2015. Kimbrel is signed through 2017 with a club option in 2018.
