Jon Lester and John Lackey know each other quite well from their days with the Boston Red Sox. However, their meeting Friday night was not a friendly reunion.
The two were all business as they faced off in Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.
Both pitchers looked impressive, but Lackey and the Cardinals ultimately came away with the 4-0 win.
Lackey allowed two hits and zero runs while striking out five in 7 1/3 innings. Lester ended up with three earned runs against him, but he kept the game close. He allowed five hits while striking out nine in 7 1/3 innings.
The Cardinals had a slim 1-0 lead heading into the eighth, but a pair of home runs by Thomas Pham and Stephen Piscotty secured the win.
Game 2 will take place at 5:37 p.m. ET on Saturday.
