Rich Hill came to the Red Sox at the perfect time.
Boston's younger pitchers were nearing their inning limits, and veterans Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly were out with injuries. Hill, who made his first start Sept. 13 against the Tampa Bay Rays, has certainly made the most of his chance, posting a 1-0 record and a 1.93 ERA in two outings.
"The timing couldn't have been more perfect for all of us," interim manager Torey Lovullo said on "Friday Night Fenway" before the Red Sox's game against the Baltimore Orioles. "We were trying to give some of our starters some time down. It worked out and coincided that Joe Kelly goes down, he slots in and now we have five starters plus a pen day. Had we not had Rich Hill here, we would have been really backed up against the wall."
