Pablo Sandoval's status for the rest of the season is in doubt.

The Boston Red Sox third baseman is battling a "significant upper respiratory infection," which kept him out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"We want to make sure that these guys are coming here to work -- that's their job," interim manager Torey Lovullo said on "Red Sox First Pitch" before Wednesday's game. "With all things considered, based on his health and the medical information we're gathering, we're going to do the best thing for Pablo Sandoval. Right now he's still very ill."
