Brandon Spikes' chances of playing in the NFL any time soon just got even worse.

The former New England Patriot was suspended by the NFL for the first four weeks of the season, according to ESPN Insider Field Yates.

Spikes is currently a free agent after his second stint with the Patriots ended abruptly. Spikes returned to the Patriots during the offseason, but he was released on June 8 following a hit-and-run accident, which he eventually pleaded guilty to.

Spikes was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 and played his first four seasons in New England. The linebacker spent the 2014 season with the Buffalo Bills.

He wasn't the only free agent reportedly suspended, though. Another ex-Patriot, Jermaine Cunningham, was suspended six weeks, according to Yates. The linebacker pleaded guilty in May to charges stemming from a "revenge porn" incident.

Mike Williams (six weeks), Jonathan Dwyer (three weeks) and Rodney Austin (six weeks) also were suspended. The reason for all five suspensions were not made public, according to the report.
